Back in Texas (aka Home)

I have these posted on my main blog, but in hindsight, they make more sense here...

I wasn't the only that enjoyed the balmy Palm Desert weather.

Secret of Mana: My Christmas tradition

Here's something I started doing back in December '99, and I've actually stayed with it for the most part. Damnedest thing, really.

Holidays are a nostalgic time, and when I turn to nostalgia, video games are usually present in my thoughts. It'd take a lot more time than I'd care to invest if I tried to list all the games I have fond memories of, but Secret of Mana will always be near the top.

I try to make a point to play Mana for a bit around this time of year. It's never mattered if I get only a little ways into the game, or play it through to the end; just as long as I can say it saw some playtime.

It's amazing that I've been a fan of this game for about 17 years, give or take, and yet I can still enjoy it like I did when I was a kid. I personally haven't played too many games -- outside of the Super Mario series -- that can make that claim.

My old buddy, Greg, introduced me to the game in the sixth grade (either late '94 or early '95), and back then I was more into fighting games than anything else. In fact, aside from Zelda, and to a lesser extent, Soul Blazer, I wasn't too interested in RPGs. But once he and I started up a 2-player game, that opinion changed.

Up to that point, the only (simultaneous) co-op games I'd played were more arcade/action-oriented titles; games like Contra, Guerrilla War, and Bubble Bobble. Taking on a huge adventure with a friend or two was something new for me, and I'll never understand why there weren't more games like it at the time. Square had the engine; a redesigned game with only a few enhancements would have been just fine with me. There are sequels/follow-ups, but aside from Seiken Densetsu 3, which was my first import, I'd rather not think about most of those.

On a slightly different note, one of the nice things about being in California for Christmas, was playing the game outside for a while. Kind of digging the balmy Palm Desert weather.
